According to ICv2, Konami Digital Entertainment has alleged that Upper Deck is the source of the allegedly counterfeit Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG cards it found in packages distributed by Vintage Sports Cards. Go ahead, do your double take and read that again. Upper Deck, the U.S. distributor of the classic Japanese card game, is being accused of counterfeiting its own cards for sale under a different label.Upper Deck has called the claim "absurd," according to ICv2, and I tend to agree. I mean, why would Upper Deck seek to undercut its own profits? Unless, of course, the collectible card game market were dying. But surely no. It's healthy as a horse. Isn't it?

lolcats... so hypnotic...
Anyway. CCG's have shown to be very sensitive to the economy. When the economy was booming, ccg's were selling well (Poke owes a lot of their success to timing). When it started to bust, CCG sales did too. Yugi didn't become the new Poke because of this. Hell fires, I'm actually surprised by the variety I still see when I go to The Source.
Generally speaking, I was only expecting to see Magic, Pokemon, Legend of the Five Ring, and Vampire the Eternal Struggle cling on despite the economy. And VES only maybe. Yugi might too. Scyre going under though, that's a really bad sign.
I'm also expecting something similar from the gaming industry in general. WizKids (owned by fucking Topps!) going under might just be the first. WotC will make it though. White Wolf will too. Palladium books will on pure tenacity. As for the rest, I don't know. We lost Guaridan's of Order a few years ago. Some of the other, more fringe, companies that started at the beginning of the 3.0 D&D days have also dropped off the map. There's also been a shuffle of brands to keep a few other titles alive. It'll be interesting to see how everything finally does go down.
