Oy. This is a tough one. I like a lot of underrated movies. Some that come to mind were underrated by me before I watched them (i.e.
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle), some of them are just barely even acknowledged to exist (
Sneakers). I guess at the end of the day, I have to say...
Yep,
Dark City. I liked it so much when Josh showed it to me, I ended up doing my senior thesis on it...and then used it for my Summa Cum Laude thesis that I had to defend to three different departments.
I liked it because it asked philosophical questions about the nature of the soul, about what makes us human, and borrowed lots of elements from the film noir genre. But at the same time, it told a compelling, sci-fi story with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. And, fun fact - Ebert called it the best movie of 1997. He even recorded a commentary track on the DVD. So if you haven't seen it yet, check it out.
